Dr. Telkes was the first woman scientist to receive The Society of Women Engineers Achievement Award. He believed that the energy emanating from the sun has the power to transform human life. He made many inventions related to solar energy and proved his logic right. Dr. Telkes was born on December 12, 1900 in the Hungarian city of Budapest. He did many works in the field of solar energy technology and achieved success.
ABOUT HER STUDIES
Maria Telkes, who made important contributions in the field of solar energy, studied physical chemistry at the University of Budapest in 1920 and earned her PhD in 1924. He completed this study before his time.
After completing her studies, Dr. Maria went to the United States of America. After this there he started working as a biophysicist. In the year 1937, he also acquired US citizenship.
Dr. Maria Telkes was part of the Solar Energy Committee at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was also invited by the US government to develop a solar distiller that converts sea water into fresh water. It is considered the greatest invention. It was also used by soldiers in the Pacific War.
After the war, Dr.Maria Telkes worked as an Associate Research Professor at MIT. She was able to secure private funding for her project in 1948 and used it to build the Dover Sun House. The project became widely popular. He holds over 20 patents and has worked for several energy companies. Dr. Telkes is also known for making the solar oven design, which is used till date. And this is the reason why people also remember her by the name of ‘Sun Queen’.
